Summary
Tympanoplasty is that repair of the tympanic membrane(TM) with inspection of middle ear and possible ossicular chain reconstruction.


Techniques
Techniques used for tympanoplasty include overlay and underlay. Underlay is the technique used in this surgery. Whether to use the Unerlay technique or not depends on the patient's posterior central perforation and perforation size.


Type of surgery
Types of surgery are Types I, II, III, IV, and V.
The operation is Type I. Type I refers to simple tympanoplasty, such as surgery to treat perforation of the tympanic membrane, using the temporal fascia and the meatal skin of the tympanic membrane.


Application
High-risk patients
  - Perforation of the tympanic membrane
  - Cholesteatoma
  - Other lesion involving tympanic membrane or tympanic cavity
  - Otorrhea
  - Malfunctioning of the eustachian tube

Low-risk patients in the high-risk group
  - Low function of the Eustachian tube
  - Smokers
  - Diabetics
  - Taking steroids
  - Actively draining from the ears


Complication
  - Recurrence of tympanic membrane perforation
  - Cholesteatoma
  - Dysgeusia
  - Lateralization
  - Blunting
  - Vertigo
  - Sensorineural Hearing Loss(SNHL)
  - Facial Nerve Injury
