Intratympanic gentamicin infusion has been used in place of surgical treatment in patients with Meniere's disease who are not responding to medication, as the vestibular toxicity of aminoglycoside drugs.
It is known that gentamicin is absorbed into the inner ear through the fenestra cochleae after it is administered into the middle ear. It destroys hair cells and causes vestibular function and hearing damage.
Aminoglycosides have been shown to cause damage not only to hair cells but also to cancer cells responsible for endolymph formation.
Therefore, the effect of gentamicin infusion may be manifested not only by lowering vestibular function but also by alleviating endolymph edema.
